REGISTER GUIDE ยท SOUTH AFRICA
Check an FSCA licence.
TrueBroker is a free broker safety checker, and this page is its register guide for South Africa. South African brokers hold an FSP number, and the FSCA search returns the number, the legal name and a status field that says more than most registers do.
Where is the register?
Use the FSCA FSP search and look the firm up by name or FSP number.
What do you match?
- The FSP number the broker quotes returns the same legal name
- The status reads Authorised, with no qualifier
- The categories cover derivatives if that is what you are trading
What are the traps?
Read the status field to the end. The FSCA records qualified statuses, and Authorised followed by Requested Lapse means the firm has asked for its own authorisation to end. That is the single most useful thing this register says, and a broker in that state is winding its licence down while still taking deposits.
THE SHORT VERSION
Match the FSP number to the legal name and read the whole status line: Authorised with a lapse request pending is not the same licence it appears to be. The full method is in check a broker. Checking elsewhere? The FCA, CySEC and ASIC each hide something different, and offshore registers confirm the firm but never the number.
