Account Types
IBKR sorts retail clients along two axes that are easy to confuse. The first is a commercial plan — IBKR Pro or IBKR Lite. The second is the account structure you are offered at application, and that one is decided by which IBKR entity your country of residence routes you to. The second axis matters more.
IBKR Pro and IBKR Lite
IBKR Lite is not a global product. IBKR states it is available to US residents holding Individual, Joint, IRA or Trust accounts where the trustee and beneficiary are natural persons, and to US-domiciled financial advisors trading on behalf of retail clients. If you live outside the United States, IBKR Pro is the only plan open to you. Advisors also have to keep fewer than 15% of client accounts and client equity outside the US, and may hold no client accounts whose holder is resident in Israel.
Both plans carry the same headline account terms. IBKR’s own Required Minimums page shows a USD 0.00 account minimum and a USD 0.00 monthly inactivity fee for both Pro and Lite, and USD 0.00 monthly inactivity fees for advisor, non-professional advisor, family office and hedge fund investment accounts. There is no deposit you must make to keep the account open.
| Term | IBKR Lite | IBKR Pro |
|---|---|---|
| US exchange-listed stocks and ETFs | Commission-free | Fixed or Tiered pricing |
| Other stocks and ETFs | Fixed pricing | Fixed or Tiered pricing |
| Minimum balance | USD 0 | USD 0 |
| Maintenance / inactivity fee | USD 0 | USD 0 |
| Interest paid on available cash | Benchmark minus 1.5% | Benchmark minus 0.5% |
| Margin loan rate | Benchmark plus 2.5% | From benchmark plus 1.5% |
| USD margin, first USD 100,000 | 6.130% | 5.130% |
| IB SmartRouting | Not available | Available |
| Trader Workstation | Yes, except for brokers’ Lite clients | Yes |
The difference is not only commission. On IBKR’s published USD margin schedule a Lite client pays a flat 6.130% at every loan tier, while a Pro client pays 5.130% on the first USD 100,000 and as little as 4.130% on balances above USD 50m. Lite also pays a full percentage point less interest on idle cash. If you borrow, or if you sit on cash, a commission-free account can be the more expensive one.
You are not locked in. IBKR says your first three reclassifications between the two plans are processed daily, and any after that quarterly.
Cash, margin, portfolio margin — and how they change by entity
The account types you can choose at application are not the same everywhere. IBKR’s Account Guide serves a different version per entity:
| Entity | Account types offered |
|---|---|
| Interactive Brokers LLC (US) | Cash, Margin, IRA Margin, Portfolio Margin |
| Interactive Brokers (U.K.) Limited | Cash, Margin, SIPP, Portfolio Margin |
| Interactive Brokers Australia Pty. Ltd. | Cash (Investment, Trading or SMSF) or Margin (Leveraged Trading or Professional Investor) |
| Interactive Brokers Canada Inc. | Cash and Margin. Portfolio Margin is not available to IBKR Canada clients because of regulator restrictions |
| Interactive Brokers Ireland Limited | The US site refers you to IBKR Ireland’s own site for the equivalent list |
Portfolio Margin is the risk-based calculation, and it has a real minimum: IBKR states that US securities regulations require USD 110,000 or equivalent to open one, and that if the account falls below USD 100,000 Reg T requirements apply instead. Accounts still subject to the US Pattern Day Trading rule must hold USD 25,000 in equity to day trade during the rule’s phase-out period.
Cash accounts are more restrictive than most brokers’. You must hold enough settled cash to cover the purchase plus commissions, shorting is not allowed, cash from a stock sale is only available three business days after trade date, and market, relative and VWAP orders require a 5% cash cushion. IBKR’s Account Guide notes also state that a cash account can be upgraded to margin, but a margin account cannot be downgraded back to cash.
Ownership structures
IBKR’s Account Guide covers Individual, Joint, Trust, a retirement account and UGMA/UTMA for personal clients. A Joint account can be held as Tenants with Rights of Survivorship, Tenancy in Common, Community Property or Tenancy by the Entirety. The retirement column changes with the entity: IRA in the US, RRSP or Spousal RSP for Canadian tax residents, SIPP under the UK entity and SMSF under the Australian entity. UGMA/UTMA is US residents only and is cash-only — margin is not available. Retirement accounts may hold cash or margin trading permissions but may never borrow cash or short stock.
Institutional structures carry real minimums where retail ones do not. A Broker Master account requires a USD 10,000 up-front deposit applied against commissions over the first eight months, with the shortfall charged as a maintenance fee, and USD 2,000 of commissions a month from the ninth. Accounts using IBPrime services require USD 1,000,000. A FIX CTCI connection carries a USD 1,500 per month minimum commission for the first session.
One detail that catches people: base currency availability varies by affiliate. Accounts opened through Interactive Brokers (India) Pvt. Ltd. can only use INR as base currency, and accounts through Interactive Brokers Securities Japan, Inc. can only use JPY.
Deposits & Withdrawals
IBKR’s funding policy is built around one idea: money should arrive and leave by traceable bank rails only. There are no cards, no e-wallets and no cash. IBKR states that accepting physical currency is against its policy and that any physical currency deposit attracts a special handling fee of 1% of the amount, minimum USD 50. It does not accept physical stock certificates, and it “strongly discourages and, generally, rejects” third-party deposits.
Withdrawal fees, and the rule most reviews get wrong
IBKR allows two free withdrawal requests per calendar month, not one. After the second withdrawal of any kind, the fees below apply to each subsequent one. The cut-off runs on New York time, not your local time.
| Currency | Bank wire / transfer | Cheque | BACS / GIRO / ACH / EFT / SEPA |
|---|---|---|---|
| USD | 10.00 | 4.00 | 1.00 |
| CAD | 12.00 | — | 2.00 |
| GBP | 7.00 | — | 1.00 |
| EUR | 8.00 | — | 1.00 |
| CHF | 10.00 | — | — |
| AED | 18.00 | — | — |
| AUD | 15.00 | — | — |
| SGD | 15.00 | — | 1.00 |
| HKD | 95.00 | — | 8.00 |
| JPY | 1,600 (1,760 including tax for IB-JP clients) | — | — |
| ZAR | 200.00 | — | — |
| HUF | 6,000.00 | — | — |
IBKR is explicit that these fees do not cover third-party costs: any charge levied by a beneficiary or correspondent bank is yours, and may be deducted from the proceeds. A returned cheque costs USD 25 in the US.
Deposits
Deposits are free in every currency IBKR publishes a schedule for, with one exception: in Mexico only the first deposit each month is free and subsequent ones cost MXN 100. The methods IBKR names in its own disclosures are wire transfer, direct bank transfer (ACH), cheque, online bill payment, SEPA, BACS, GIRO and EFT, plus position transfers by ACATS, ATON and free-of-payment delivery. US T-Bills can be deposited as collateral but only in blocks of at least USD 1,000,000. Mobile cheque deposit exists in the US only.
Two mechanics are worth knowing before you fund. IBKR distinguishes a credit period — the number of days before money is posted and tradable — from a withdrawal hold period, the number of days before you may withdraw what you deposited; both are counted from close of business. Interest is not paid during the hold period on cheques, which is why IBKR steers you towards electronic transfers. And wire routing instructions vary by currency: they are generated when you create a deposit notification in Client Portal, and IBKR warns that a deposit routed to the wrong currency account may be rejected outright or auto-converted at the receiving bank’s discretion, with the risk sitting on you.
Cheques are only accepted where IBKR is the direct payee and the writer shares the account holder’s surname, or, for organisation accounts, is affiliated with the account as an officer, trader or owner. IBKR funds in up to 29 currencies, but base currency availability varies by affiliate and is fixed at account opening — accounts opened through the Indian entity can only use INR and those through the Japanese entity only JPY.
One gap we could not close: IBKR renders its per-country funding-method and timing matrix from JavaScript, so we could not capture credit periods and hold periods method by method. Check them in Client Portal for your own entity before you plan around a settlement date.
Special Offers
IBKR does not run deposit bonuses, welcome credits, cashback or rebate promotions. We looked across the US, UK, Irish, Australian, Singaporean and Canadian sites and found none, which is consistent with a firm whose pitch is price rather than incentive. What it does run are three standing programmes, all with published terms.
Refer a Friend
To refer, your account must have a net liquidation value of at least USD 2,000 and you must have placed at least one securities trade. You receive USD 200 per referral, capped at 15 referrals a year and 30 in total. The person you refer can earn up to USD 1,000 of IBKR stock, subject to the programme conditions.
The exclusions are specific and worth reading before you count on it. Residents of Japan, Denmark, Spain, Portugal, Poland, mainland China and Israel cannot participate. Residents of Canada may act as referrers and collect the USD 200, but are not eligible to earn IBKR stock.
Stock Yield Enhancement Program
IBKR borrows your fully paid shares against cash collateral, lends them on, and splits the interest earned with you fifty-fifty. IBKR states you can still trade the loaned stock with no restrictions. It is open to Lite and Pro clients alike. The trade-off IBKR does not lead with is that lent-out shares are not the same as shares sitting in custody, so weigh it against the protection arrangements rather than treating it as free money.
Interest on idle cash, and the catch
IBKR advertises up to USD 3.13% on uninvested cash. The rate is benchmark minus 0.5% on IBKR Pro and benchmark minus 1.5% on IBKR Lite. The qualification matters: accounts with a net asset value below USD 100,000 are paid at a rate proportional to the USD 100,000 rate, scaled by the ratio of your NAV to USD 100,000. A USD 20,000 account therefore earns a fifth of the headline rate, not the headline rate.
Other standing offers
- A free trial and a paper trading account with simulated funds, available before you fund anything.
- A no-transaction-fee ETF programme covering over 150 ETFs.
- An Insured Bank Deposit Sweep Program for eligible US clients, sweeping free credit balances to partner banks in tranches of up to USD 246,500 each, for up to USD 5,000,000 of FDIC insurance on an individual account and USD 10,000,000 on a joint account, on top of SIPC cover.
None of this is a bonus in the sense the word is usually used in this industry, and that is a point in IBKR’s favour rather than against it. A broker that has to buy your deposit is telling you something about its spreads.
How to Trade
There are two execution models inside IBKR, and which one you get depends on your plan. This is the most important thing to understand before you open an account, and IBKR discloses it in a footnote rather than a headline.
Two routing models
For IBKR Pro clients, orders go through IB SmartRouting, which IBKR describes as continuously searching for the best available prices across exchanges and dark pools and dynamically re-routing all or part of an order, factoring in transaction costs, fees and rebates. Around it sits IBKR BestX: the IBUSOPT destination for US listed equity and certain index options, the firm’s own alternative trading system (IBKR ATS) for US stocks and ETFs, and Pegged-to-Midpoint, Pegged-to-Best and Reroute to SMART order types.
For IBKR Lite clients, the model is different. IBKR’s own disclosure states that Lite “provides commission-free trades in US exchange-listed stocks and ETFs routed to select market makers” and that “IBKR is able to provide commission free trading in certain products because it receives payment for order flow from market makers for these orders”. IB SmartRouting is listed as a Pro feature and is not available on Lite. Commission-free is therefore not the same as cost-free, and the plan comparison makes clear that the two do not share a routing engine.
Lite also carries a volume test. IBKR reviews monthly US listed stock orders, and if the combined volume of OnClose, OnOpen, outside-regular-hours or sub-USD 1.00 NMS orders exceeds 10% of the account’s monthly US stock volume, a commission of the lesser of USD 0.005 per share or 1% of trade value is charged. IBKR also reserves the right to reject any Lite order that looks like non-retail trading behaviour, offering resubmission on a Fixed commission basis instead.
Order types
IBKR states that Pro clients have access to over 100 order types, algos and tools. The published list includes Limit, Market, Market to Limit, Market with Protection, Stop, Stop Limit, Stop with Protection, Trailing and its several variants, Limit if Touched, Market if Touched, Limit and Market on Open and on Close, Bracket, Conditional, Iceberg/Reserve, Hidden, Discretionary, Sweep to Fill, Box Top, Block, Basket, At Auction, Relative, Passive Relative, MidPrice, the Pegged and Snap families, Request for Quote, Retail Price Improvement, ScaleTrader, Volatility and Pegged Volatility, plus algos including Adaptive, Arrival Price, Accumulate/Distribute, Dark Ice, TWAP, VWAP (Best-Efforts) and Time Variant Percent of Volume. Time in force covers Good Til Cancelled, Good Til Date/Time, Good After Time/Date, Immediate or Cancel and Fill or Kill.
Order cancellation is mostly free but not always. In the US, TWS directed and SMART orders carry no cancel or modify fee, while API/CTCI directed orders are charged USD 0.01 per order against a USD 0.25 execution credit. In EMEA, direct-routed orders to TGATE cost EUR 0.50 per cancel or modify against a EUR 2.50 credit.
Market hours
Regular US trading hours for both plans are 09:30 to 16:00 ET, with outside-regular-hours trading available from 04:00 to 20:00. Beyond that IBKR runs a genuine overnight session:
| Product | Overnight availability (ET) |
|---|---|
| US stocks and ETFs (10,000+ symbols) | 20:00 – 03:50 |
| Global bonds | 20:00 – 17:00 |
| Equity index futures and options | Around the clock |
| Korea Stock Exchange futures and options | 05:00 – 17:00 |
The first US overnight session opens Sunday at 20:00 ET and the last closes Friday at 03:50 ET. Trades executed between 20:00 and midnight carry the following day’s trade date — a detail that matters for settlement and for tax reporting.
Leverage and liquidation
IBKR does not publish a single headline leverage figure, because it does not use one. Margin is calculated in real time against the position, under Reg T or Portfolio Margin in the US and under the local regime elsewhere. For retail CFD clients of the UK entity, IBKR states a minimum regulatory initial margin of 20%, which is 5:1; the FCA’s permanent regime caps retail CFD leverage between 30:1 and 2:1 depending on the underlying.
The liquidation policy is stricter than the industry norm and IBKR says so plainly: positions in accounts with inadequate margin are liquidated automatically, in real time, and IBKR’s client protection page states it does not allow the borrower days to correct a margin deficiency as regulation would permit. If you trade on margin here, expect to be closed out immediately rather than called.
Opening an Account
Opening an account with IBKR is entirely online, but the first thing that happens is invisible to you: your country of legal residence decides which IBKR entity your application goes to, and that decision sets your protections, your available account types and even your base currency. IBKR’s own sites prompt you to switch — visiting the US site from Europe raises a “Which IBKR website is best for you?” banner offering to send you to the Irish site.
Which entity you get
IBKR does not publish a single residence-to-entity table. The mapping below is ours, built from each entity’s own website, registered office and regulator as IBKR publishes them in its site footers, and from the redirect its sites apply — the Hungarian domain, for example, forwards to the Irish site. Confirm which entity your own application was assigned to in your client agreement rather than assuming from this.

What the application asks for
Beyond name, address and date of birth, IBKR asks for your employer’s name, address and telephone number; your tax or national identification number; and the bank or third-party broker account numbers you intend to fund from, plus a routing number if you plan to deposit by cheque. Outside the US the application also collects information on your assets and income, your source of wealth and your source of funds, and your investment objectives and experience. IBKR defines source of wealth as the origin of your total net worth and source of funds as the activity that generated the money you are funding with — so an answer of “savings” alone will not clear it.
Documents
US-resident applicants are usually verified electronically and asked for documents only if that fails. Everywhere else you should expect to upload two documents:
- Proof of identity — passport, national identity card or driving licence. IBKR asks that the document show full name, date and place of birth, a clear photograph, your signature, the document number, the expiry date and the country of issue, and that you supply every page if that information is spread across pages.
- Proof of residential address — less than six months old and a scan of a hard copy. Accepted: utility bill (electricity, gas, water, landline, home broadband or TV, but explicitly not a mobile phone bill), council tax bill, home insurance bill, bank, mortgage or brokerage statement, a signed and stamped letter from your bank on its letterhead, a credit card statement no older than six weeks, a government-issued letter such as a property tax bill or pension statement, or a residence permit.
A driving licence or national identity card can serve as one or the other, not both. In China, a national identity card counts as both if the address on it matches the application, and both sides must be uploaded. For applicants in Hungary the address card showing the current residential address is accepted. Australian trust applicants must have the trust deed and proof of principal place of business certified and physically mailed to IBKR’s Sydney office — faxes and emails of certified documents are not accepted.
Trust applications are heavier again: a Trustee Certification Form, proof of identity or existence for each trustee, proof of trustee address, and details of between one and five settlors or grantors along with each beneficiary’s percentage of ownership.
Submitting and timing
Documents go through Client Portal, which IBKR says gives the fastest processing and approval. Postal and courier addresses exist for each entity separately — Chicago for IB LLC, London for IBUK, Dublin for IBIE, Montreal for IB Canada, Sydney for IBA, Zug for IBKR Financial Services AG, and so on. IBKR asks specifically for scanned images, warning that photographs taken with cameras or smartphones can delay approval, and states that an application cannot be approved until the documents have been received and reviewed.
IBKR does not publish a stated approval turnaround on any of the account-opening pages we checked, so treat any “one to two business days” figure — including the one previously carried in this review — as unverified.
Negative Balance Protection
Interactive Brokers does not publish a negative balance protection guarantee. We checked its US, UK and Irish margin pages, both CFD product pages, the client protection pages for the US, UK, Irish, Australian and Singapore entities, and every site footer, and found no such commitment anywhere. What we found instead was the opposite statement, repeated.
On the UK and Irish margin pages IBKR writes “Investing in financial products involves risk. Losses may exceed the value of your original investment” and “Margin borrowing is only for experienced investors with high risk tolerance. You may lose more than your initial investment.” The UK site’s standing footer disclosure says “Your capital is at risk and your losses may exceed the value of your original investment.” The US site carries the same warning on every page.
What actually differs by entity
| Entity / product | Position on negative balances |
|---|---|
| Interactive Brokers LLC — US margin account | No protection stated. IBKR’s own disclosure is that you may lose more than your initial investment |
| Interactive Brokers (U.K.) Limited — retail CFD account | Covered by the FCA rule below. IBKR itself does not restate the protection on its CFD page |
| Interactive Brokers Ireland Limited — retail CFD account | Equivalent EU product-intervention regime applies. Again not restated by IBKR |
| All entities — margin securities and futures accounts | No negative balance protection. These are not CFDs and the retail CFD rules do not reach them |
The FCA rule is real and it is narrow. COBS 22.5.17R provides that “the liability of a retail client for all restricted speculative investments connected to the retail client’s account is limited to the funds in that account”, and the guidance at 22.5.18G confirms this means a retail client cannot lose more than the funds specifically dedicated to trading those investments. That covers CFDs and CFD-like options for retail clients. It does not cover a leveraged share portfolio, a futures position or a short option, which is how most IBKR clients actually use leverage here.
What protects you at IBKR is not a guarantee but a mechanism. IBKR marks every client position to market continuously, credit-vets orders before execution and liquidates automatically in real time rather than issuing a margin call and waiting. IBKR states it does not allow a borrower the days that regulation would permit to cure a deficiency. That reduces the chance of a negative balance forming; it does not promise you will not end up owing money after a gap.
Prohibited Countries
Interactive Brokers does not publish a list of prohibited countries. We searched its US, UK, Irish, Australian, Singaporean and Canadian sites and found no page naming the residences it will not onboard, and its account application renders the country list from JavaScript rather than serving it as a document. Any list you see elsewhere presented as “IBKR’s restricted countries” — including the one this review previously carried — is inference, not disclosure, and we have removed it.
What can be established is which jurisdictions IBKR is legally required to block, and, unusually, exactly how well it managed to. On 15 July 2025 Interactive Brokers LLC agreed to pay the US Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control USD 11,832,136 to settle potential civil liability for 12,367 apparent violations of multiple sanctions programmes between 15 July 2016 and 31 January 2024. The enforcement release is public and it is the most detailed account of IBKR’s geographic restrictions in existence.
Comprehensively sanctioned jurisdictions
OFAC’s release names four jurisdictions IBKR is barred from serving and did serve: Iran, Cuba, Syria and the Crimea region of Ukraine. Between July 2016 and July 2021 IBKR provided brokerage services to more than 200 accountholders located in those places, who executed nearly 12,000 transactions. OFAC records that most of those customers had given know-your-customer information showing ordinary residence somewhere unsanctioned, and were only identified by their IP addresses.
IBKR blocks by IP address against what OFAC calls its “IP Blocking List”. The release describes the failures precisely: a technical bug in the geo-blocking controls let some customers in Iran, Cuba and Syria reach the desktop and mobile applications; Crimea was absent from the IP Blocking List entirely before May 2019; and IP addresses for Sevastopol were missing until June 2021. IBKR did not adequately audit or test those systems over that period.
Other restricted categories
- Russia. IBKR processed 259 customer funds transfers to blocked Russian banks between February and October 2022, and two accounts held by persons in Russia took 66 margin loans in 2023 after a technical fault restored margin permissions. New investment in Russia by US persons has been prohibited since April 2022.
- Chinese Military-Industrial Complex securities. IBKR processed 29 sale transactions in the securities of 13 restricted entities between July 2022 and January 2024, because its order system did not screen sanctioned securities before automatic margin liquidations.
- Venezuela and Global Magnitsky designations. Transactions for a blocked Venezuelan individual, and trades in a company majority-owned by the sanctioned Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps.
Syria’s position has since changed: OFAC General Licence 25 of 23 May 2025 and Executive Order 14312 of 30 June 2025 revoked the executive orders underpinning the Syrian Sanctions Regulations with effect from 1 July 2025.
Restrictions that are published, but are not country bans
Several IBKR restrictions are geographic without being prohibitions, and they are easy to mistake for one another:
- IBKR Lite is available only to US residents, and advisors using it may hold no client account whose holder is resident in Israel.
- The Refer a Friend programme excludes residents of Japan, Denmark, Spain, Portugal, Poland, mainland China and Israel; Canadian residents may refer but cannot earn IBKR stock.
- EEA and UK residents cannot trade US ETFs at all, because US issuers do not produce the Key Information Document those regimes require. IBKR offers CFDs on them instead.
- Portfolio Margin is unavailable to IBKR Canada clients.
The practical position: if you live somewhere IBKR serves, an entity will onboard you; if you live in a comprehensively sanctioned jurisdiction, IBKR’s controls are designed to stop you and the record shows they have not always worked. Neither of those is a published list, and we will not invent one.

Customer Support
IBKR runs client service centres across the Americas, Europe and Asia and staffs them continuously through the trading week — but not around the clock, and the gap is real. Phone support runs from Sunday 13:00 ET to Friday 19:30 ET. IBKR states plainly that client support is not available on Saturday and has limited hours on Sunday. Chat runs Sunday 20:00 to Friday 20:00 US Eastern. If something goes wrong with your account on a Saturday, nobody is answering.
Channels
| Channel | Hours | What IBKR says about it |
|---|---|---|
| Phone | Sun 13:00 ET – Fri 19:30 ET | IBKR states it generally answers within a minute; funding and banking queries take longer |
| Chat | Sun 20:00 – Fri 20:00 ET | Authenticated, inside Client Portal. Prospective clients use a general-inquiry form |
| Web ticket / Message Center | Submit any time | Routed to a certified specialist team; allocated to an agent usually within two hours |
| Form only | Free-format inbound email is not supported at all — see below | |
| IBot | Any time | Natural-language automated assistant; IBKR’s recommended first stop |
The email position is unusual enough to state clearly: IBKR does not accept inbound commercial email, citing spam, phishing and fraudulent communications. Existing clients use the Message Center inside Client Portal; prospective clients use a web form and get a reply to the address they supply. IBKR says formal inquiries submitted during standard hours are generally answered within 24 hours. Password, security device and login problems can only be handled by telephone, because they require identity verification.
Phone numbers by location
IBKR publishes direct-dial numbers for Australia, Canada (Toronto and Vancouver), China, Europe, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Ireland, Japan, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and the United States — the UK line is +44 20 3744 7220, the US toll-free line 1 (877) 442-2757, Ireland +353 1 264 0643, Singapore +65 6990 5200. The phone menu is numbered by topic: trade issues, cash and position transfers, general and login assistance, new accounts, security devices and technical issues.
One caveat IBKR discloses and most reviews skip: calls placed outside a service centre’s local operating hours are automatically routed to an agent at another centre, and you may be assisted by an employee of a different IBKR affiliate acting on behalf of the entity that holds your account. An Interactive Brokers LLC client can be served by staff in Hong Kong. That is efficient; it also means the person answering may not be in your jurisdiction or your time zone.
Languages
We could not verify a fourteen-language support claim and have removed it. What IBKR publishes is narrower and varies by site: the US site offers English, Spanish, Portuguese, Korean, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese; the UK site English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Russian; the Irish site English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Hungarian and Portuguese. A Russian-language telephone line is listed separately, and the Japanese entity publishes an English direct-dial number alongside its main line. Assume English is the reliable channel and check your own entity’s site for the rest.
Which channel to use
IBKR publishes its own routing guidance and it is worth following. Phone for anything time-sensitive: trade busts (under 30 minutes), execution or liquidation queries, real-time margin questions, order status and routing problems, and password resets. Ticket or chat for funding and banking, tax and statements, dividends and corporate actions, market data subscriptions and account permissions — most of these are answered same day or within one business day.

Conclusion
Interactive Brokers is one of the small number of brokers in this catalogue where the regulatory picture is strong on every axis we test, and where the interesting question is not whether the firm is real but which of its many separate entities you will end up with. That answer is set by where you live, and it changes your protection by an order of magnitude.
What we verified
Interactive Brokers (U.K.) Limited is Authorised on the FCA register under firm reference number 208159, with permission to hold and control client money, Companies House number 03958476 and a status effective date of 6 February 2002. Interactive Brokers LLC is an active broker-dealer on FINRA BrokerCheck, CRD 36418, SEC number 8-47257, FINRA-approved since 6 January 1995. IBKR also publishes reference numbers for its Irish entity (Central Bank of Ireland C423427), Australian entity (AFSL 453554), Singapore entity (MAS CMS100917), Indian entity (SEBI INZ000217730), Japanese entity (Kanto Local Finance Bureau 187) and the DIFC branch of the UK entity (DFSA F008423). We have since searched MAS ourselves, on 12 August 2026: INTERACTIVE BROKERS SINGAPORE PTE. LTD. is listed as a Capital Markets Services Licensee dealing in capital markets products, covering securities, collective investment schemes and exchange traded derivatives, at 1 Harbourfront Place. MAS publishes the firm’s own website against that entry, which is how we matched it rather than by name alone. Note that MAS publishes no licence numbers at all, so CMS100917 rests on IBKR’s own disclosure and not on the register. We could not machine-search the SFC, DFSA, ASIC or Central Bank of Ireland registers and record those as not checked rather than not found.
Two things surfaced on the FCA register that belong in front of you. Interactive Brokers LLC held FRN 178750 and Interactive Brokers Luxembourg SARL held FRN 849401; both now read “No longer authorised”. And the register carries two live entries for unauthorised firms using this brand — “Interactive Brokers (clone of an FCA Authorised Firm)” and “Interactive Brokers / Polar Capital (Clone of FCA Authorised Firm)”. If you were approached by someone using the IBKR name, that is the more likely explanation than the real firm.
Who this suits
- Active and professional traders who will actually use IB SmartRouting, over 100 order types, the IBKR ATS and the API stack. The pricing rewards volume and the execution technology is genuinely first-tier.
- Multi-market investors. IBKR states access to 170 global markets from one unified account, funded in up to 29 currencies. Its own site footnote notes that its country count includes territories as well as countries.
- People who care about balance-sheet safety. IBG LLC reports USD 22.3 billion of equity capital, over USD 13.9 billion in excess of regulatory requirements, no long-term debt, and USD 4.8 billion of pre-tax income for 2025; Interactive Brokers LLC is rated A- Outlook Stable by S&P. IBKR computes its client reserve daily rather than weekly, which is more than the rules require.
- US clients specifically, who get SIPC cover of USD 500,000 with a USD 250,000 cash sublimit, plus an excess policy at Lloyd’s adding USD 30 million per account, subject to a USD 150 million aggregate.
Who it does not suit
- Anyone who wants a broker to catch them. There is no negative balance protection outside retail CFD accounts, IBKR’s own pages repeat that losses may exceed your original investment, and liquidation is automatic and immediate rather than a call you can answer.
- UK clients who assume an FCA licence means FSCS cover. IBKR’s own UK footer states that Interactive Brokers LLC is a SIPC member and that “products are only covered by the UK FSCS in limited circumstances”. Your assets are largely custodied with the US affiliate. That is disclosed, lawful and very easy to miss.
- Irish and EEA clients, whose Investor Compensation Scheme cover is 90% of the loss capped at EUR 20,000 — a fraction of the US figure for the same group.
- Australian clients holding ASX or Cboe Australia shares, where IBKR uses BNP Paribas as sub-custodian and states the arrangement “may impact whether or not you would be entitled to access compensation” under the National Guarantee Fund.
- Futures traders anywhere: futures and options on futures are excluded from SIPC and from the excess policy.
- Beginners who want commission-free simplicity without reading footnotes. IBKR Lite is US-only, routes to selected market makers on payment for order flow rather than through SmartRouting, pays a full point less on cash, charges a point more on margin, and applies a commission if more than 10% of your monthly US stock volume is on-open, on-close, outside regular hours or sub-USD 1.
- Anyone who needs help at the weekend. Support closes Friday evening and does not reopen until Sunday afternoon New York time.
The honest summary
IBKR earns its reputation on cost, execution and financial strength, and it discloses more about its own failures than most brokers disclose about their successes — the USD 11,832,136 OFAC settlement of July 2025 was voluntarily self-disclosed after IBKR’s own compliance review found 12,367 apparent violations. The risk here is not that the firm takes your money. It is that the entity you are onboarded to protects you far less than the brand implies, and that the tooling assumes you know what you are doing. Read which entity your application went to before you fund it, and read what that entity’s client protection page actually promises.
